I fell very much in love with a boy one day,
he had brown eyes, brown hair, brown skin,
as if the Caribbean sun had painted him
with the sultriest color, if there has ever been.
He taught me how to stare,
of course I only knew I was doing it when he turned angrily at me;
he taught me how to sit,
sideways so I could pretend I was listening to the teacher while admiring him;
he taught me how fast my heart could beat.
Yet there was something he taught me that I can’t forget still,
that when someone hits your food tray from below,
meat patties fly high in the air and when they land on your uniform, they stick.
